What Is Visceral Manipulation?
Visceral Manipulation (VM), also known as organ-specific fascial mobilisation, is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the movement and mobility of the internal organs, such as the liver, stomach, and intestines, and their surrounding connective tissues.
Each organ needs to move freely within the body to support healthy function. When this natural motion becomes restricted, it can create tension patterns that affect the wider systems of the body, including the musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, and digestive systems.
Restrictions may develop for many reasons, including surgery, illness, infection, injury, poor posture or ongoing stress. Because the organs are surrounded by fascia and have both neural and fascial connections to the spine, ribcage, and pelvis, these restrictions can influence movement, alignment, and comfort throughout the body.
A joint or muscle restriction can affect an organ’s function, and conversely, a visceral restriction can contribute to pain, spasm, or reduced mobility in the muscles and spine.
During treatment, I assess how these deeper restrictions may be influencing posture, movement, or areas of recurrent pain. Using specific evaluation techniques and musculoskeletal tests, I identify areas of imbalance and apply gentle, precise techniques, including light compression, soft mobilisation and elongation of soft tissues, to help restore ease of motion within and between the organs, fascia, and surrounding structures.
This whole-body approach recognises that all systems of the body are connected, and that healthy movement underpins overall wellbeing. By helping to release tension and restore normal motion, Visceral Manipulation supports the body’s natural ability to heal and adapt.
VM can be particularly helpful for musculoskeletal pain that recurs or doesn’t fully resolve, such as back and neck pain, whiplash or sciatica, as well as for digestive or urinary issues, pelvic pain, postural imbalance, and discomfort following injury, trauma, or surgery.
By addressing both physical and visceral sources of tension, Visceral Manipulation helps the body move more freely, function more efficiently, and find a greater sense of balance and ease.
